George Washington Won’t Be Mad!

PTSD is not just something suffered by those who have been in combat. It is experienced by millions of people. It is most definitely experienced by many of us who have experienced gun violence.

Every year at this time I know it’s coming and I still get caught off guard.

Last year it was from the neighbors right behind us who obviously purchase “extra special” fireworks.

Two nights before Independence Day they thought they would do what many others do, shoot off fireworks early… the first one sounded like the .38 my classmate fired the day I witnessed the gun violence that changed my life. We were eating a late dinner and I was not expecting to hear a “gunshot”. Much like that day in English class when I was just reading my book for a book report and a loud explosion ripped through my ears unexpectedly. I lost it. I had a rough time.

Many of us are fortunate to live in cities and towns that spend money to put on decent fireworks shows to celebrate Independence Day. This draws people together to celebrate the reason for the holiday, instead of simply shooting off fireworks just to shoot off fireworks. Everyone has the right to use LEGAL fireworks at their home. I would just ask that folks think about common sense after you look at the graphic and consider what I shared. If you are purchasing fireworks in other locations that are illegal here and using them then that is an issue.

I promise! George Washington will not be mad if don’t buy your own fireworks and shoot them off five days before and five days after Independence Day.

You don’t know who the veteran, gun violence survivor, or sweet pup living next to you is…
